Linear layouts measuring neighbourhoods in graphs

چکیده
In this paper we introduce the graph layout parameter neighbourhood-width as a variation of the well-known cut-width. The cut-width of a graph G = (V ,E) is the smallest integer k, such that there is a linear layout : V → {1, . . . , |V |}, such that for every 1 i < |V | there are at most k edges {u, v} with (u) i and (v)> i. The neighbourhood-width of a graph is the smallest integer k, such that there is a linear layout , such that for every 1 i < |V | the vertices u with (u) i can be divided into at most k subsets each members having the same neighbourhood with respect to the vertices v with (v)> i. We show that the neighbourhood-width of a graph differs from its linear clique-width or linear NLC-width at most by one. This relation is used to show that the minimization problem for neighbourhood-width is NP-complete. Furthermore, we prove that simple modifications of neighbourhood-width imply equivalent layout characterizations for linear clique-width and linear NLC-width. We also show that every graph of path-width k or cut-width k has neighbourhood-width at most k+2 and we give several conditions such that graphs of bounded neighbourhood-width have bounded path-width or bounded cut-width. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Graph parameters measuring neighbourhoods in graphs - Bounds and applications
The neighbourhood-width of a graph G= (V ,E) is introduced in [F. Gurski, Linear layouts measuring neighbourhoods in graphs, Discrete Math. 306 (15) (2006) 1637–1650.] as the smallest integer k such that there is a linear layout : V → {1, . . . , |V |} such that for every 1 i < |V | the vertices u with (u) i can be divided into at most k subsets each members having the same neighbours with resp...
متن کاملComputing the vertex separation of unicyclic graphs
We describe an O(n log n) algorithm for the computation of the vertex separation of unicyclic graphs. The algorithm also computes a linear layout with optimal vertex separation in the same time bound. Pathwidth, node search number and vertex separation are different ways of defining the same notion. Path decompositions and search strategies can be derived from linear layouts. The algorithm appl...
متن کاملSolving Irregular Strip Packing problems by hybridising simulated annealing and linear programming
In this paper a hybrid algorithm to solve Irregular Strip Packing problems is presented. The metaheuristic simulated annealing is used to guide the search over the solution space while linear programming models are solved to generate neighbourhoods during the search process. These linear programming models, which are used to locally optimise the layouts, derive from the application of compactio...
متن کاملPlane Drawings of Queue and Deque Graphs
In stack and queue layouts the vertices of a graph are linearly ordered from left to right, where each edge corresponds to an item and the left and right end vertex of each edge represents the addition and removal of the item to the used data structure. A graph admitting a stack or queue layout is a stack or queue graph, respectively. Typical stack and queue layouts are rainbows and twists visu...
متن کاملStack and Queue Layouts of Directed Acyclic Graphs: Part II
Stack layouts and queue layouts of undirected graphs have been used to model problems in fault tolerant computing and in parallel process scheduling. However, problems in parallel process scheduling are more accurately modeled by stack and queue layouts of directed acyclic graphs (dags). A stack layout of a dag is similar to a stack layout of an undirected graph, with the additional requirement...
